It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens of Bricksburg are facing a huge new threat: Lego Duplo invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than the plastic people can rebuild.
Bricksburg has become Apocalypseburg, with everyone adjusting to their new city by being dark, brooding and edgy. Lucy tells us that the Justice League - Superman (voice of Channing Tatum), Wonder Woman (voice of Cobie Smulders), Aquaman (voice of Jason Momoa), Green Lantern (voice of Jonah Hill), and Cyborg - went off to fight the Duplos, but they never returned. Batman stayed behind to do a standalone adventure and is now living in a large fortress with Alfred (voice of Ralph Fiennes). Emmet is the only one who retains his cheerful disposition doing his usual morning coffee ritual and trying to cheer up Lucy.
The film kicks off straight after the ending of the 2014 original and the world of Lego has been invaded by the world of Duplo. The plot is not as important as the characters and the songs. Suffice it to say, Batman has to get married to save the world. Why? Well, because he's Batman!
While the original's "Everything is Awesome" song resonates to this day, this film's ear-worm tune, "This Song Is Gonna Get Stuck In Your Head" is not as polished or as likely to get stuck in your head.
I really liked the first Lego Movie and the Lego Batman Movie, they were both very clever, funny, beautifully animated and just fun to watch. I knew that a sequel would probably never reach the heights of the first, which it very clearly doesn't. But that's not to downplay the film because it's an incredibly fun outing for our plastic heroes.
🎵 This song is gonna get stuck inside your head 🎵 - maybe.
