SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY is an inspirational, heart-breaking documentary. I knew the story of Christopher’s life, as I have been a huge fan ever since I watched the first SUPERMAN movie, but the truth is my sincere admiration began when he appeared in the romantic SOMEWHERE IN TIME. His looks were spectacular, but I was also extremely impressed with his quiet, intense characterization of a man deeply in love throughout time.
The informative film was told mainly through the eyes and soul of his three children, Matthew, Alexandra, and Will. In 1995, one accidental incident forever changed everything for Christopher and those around him. How could SUPERMAN lay at death’s door? The world was shocked, and people everywhere surrounded the Reeves family with strength, courage, and love. It was a phenomenon that created a shift in our everyday paradigm.
People who suffer from spinal cord injuries are not thought about much. They become invisible to the public. What Christopher Reeve did for those who need a helping hand changed the meaning of the word handicap. This big, powerful man helped the world understand what it felt like to be vulnerable and did it with humility, grace, and class.
The documentary is superbly done. It showcases interviews from most who knew him well. It made me remember a time of heroes and hope. The sweetest segments contain brilliant, precious seconds from his best friend, Robin Williams, and his wife, Dana. Be prepared and have Kleenex nearby.
Christopher was an ordinary man who, through his strengths and flaws, made a difference in the lives of those who not only live sitting down all the time but also those who can stand and walk. What a gift. Don’t miss this beautifully told, raw, honest picture.
He will forever be Superman.
